Etched in Stone: Lessons from Recipes Found on Gravestones

EtchedinStoneLessonsfromRecipesFoundonGravestones

Explore the remarkable world of gravestone recipes, real culinary instructions etched into old headstones. Uncover how these memorials preserve family histories, celebrate food traditions, and offer a tender, tangible connection to the lives of those who came before us.

Rosie Grant is the creator behind @GhostlyArchive on TikTok and Instagram, where she documents her work researching and re-creating recipes found on gravestones. She is also the author of To Die For: A Cookbook of Gravestone Recipes. Grant works at the Center for the Study of Women at UCLA and is pursuing a food studies certificate through UCLA Extension. Grant earned her Master of Library and Information Science from the University of Maryland with a focus on digital archives, where she merged her love of food writing, cemeteries, and archival storytelling. Her gravestone recipe project began during an internship at Washington, DC’s historic Congressional Cemetery.
